NZ Steel Glenbrook Furnace

That’s me, standing inside Melter 2 at NZ Steel’s Glenbrook mill.

Two years out of university, as a young 23 year old mechanical engineer. It was literally taken a few hours before it was turned back on after we completed a full rebuild in 2001/2002 from the hearth up.

This week that same melter 2 along with melter 1 fed first steel through the new electric arc furnace. New Zealand’s biggest ever emissions reduction project, cutting the mill’s emissions by close to half, heading toward a million tonnes a year saved once it reaches full capacity. Roughly 1% of the country’s entire emissions profile.

It’s the same philosophy I built saveBOARD on. Take the material everyone else doesn’t want. Create a low-carbon product with proven technology, produce a high performing product, that is competitively priced and good for the planet.

Different material, same philosophy. Congratulations to the whole Glenbrook team, past and present for making this happen.
